The University of Lagos (UNILAG) was established in 1962, two years after Nigeria gained its independence, and has since developed into one of the most prestigious and prominent universities in the country. From 1962 to 1965, Eni Njoku was the university’s first vice-chancellor. His successor, Saburi Biobaku, sparked student activism and protests on campus. That was the beginning of UNILAG’s long history of student leadership and political consciousness.

UNILAG is now more than just a school. It is a hub for leadership, creativity, and entrepreneurship. The government suggested changing its name to Moshood Abiola University in 2012. Due to their strong adherence to the UNILAG name, students and alumni opposed the change. Later, the plan was abandoned.
The university has made significant strides in gender inclusion, research, and innovation since Professor Folasade Ogunsola was appointed Vice-Chancellor in 2022, becoming the first female to occupy the position.

Today, UNILAG hosts over 57,000 students across 12 faculties, including Arts, Law, Engineering, Medicine, and Management Sciences.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) often ranks it among Nigeria’s top schools for research and academic performance. In 2008, the NUC named UNILAG the Best University in Nigeria during the Nigerian University System Annual Merit Award (NUSAMA).
Recently, Forbes Magazine ranked UNILAG third in Africa for entrepreneurship, calling it a “startup powerhouse” for young innovators.

UNILAG continues to lead in research and technology. Its Centre for Biodiversity Conservation and Ecosystem Management (CEBCEM), founded in 2018, promotes environmental awareness and sustainability through grants and partnerships like TETFund.
