The history of Covenant University is one of ambition, new ideas, and a promise to make leaders. The school started as a faith-based notion in Ota, Ogun State, and has since developed into a global intellectual powerhouse. The Faith Tabernacle was dedicated in 2002, and Covenant University was founded that same year. The Liberation Commission, which is part of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, started the foundation process in 1999. Bishop David Oyedepo, the university’s founder, had a clear goal when it opened: to train a new generation of leaders who could make a difference.
How Covenant University has grown over the years
To understand the history of Covenant University, you also need to know that it has moved up in global rankings. In 2019, it was the first Nigerian university to make it into the Times Higher Education top 401–500 list. That accomplishment made the school a model of excellence for all of Africa.
The institution now has four colleges:
- College of Leadership Development Studies
- College of Management and Social Sciences
- College of Engineering
- College of Science and Technology
Each institution has a lot of different programs, including postgraduate studies, so that students can learn both academic and leadership abilities.
In 2025, Interswitch and Cisco gave the school a lot of help with its IT infrastructure. The donated servers, switches, and routers made its Cisco Networking Academy stronger, allowing students to learn about cybersecurity, networking, and programming in a way that is typical in the industry. This hands-on experience is similar to what ProCerts offers: modern, practical learning for students who want to get forward in their careers.
Facilities That Strengthen Learning
The Centre for Learning Resources at Covenant University is another important element of its history. One of the largest university libraries in Africa, it can hold more than 3,000 readers and is good for both research and working together.
