The Federal Government of Nigeria gave the school the go-ahead on December 16, 2004. It opened its doors on January 21, 2005. Its first group of 250 students graduated on May 28, 2005, which was the start of a successful educational path.

Caritas institution is the second Catholic institution in Nigeria. It was started by Rev. Fr. Prof. Emmanuel Mathew Paul Edeh C.S.Sp., OFR. He used what he learned from starting Madonna University to make Caritas with an even greater moral and academic goal. The Congregation of the Sisters of Jesus the Savior runs the university. This helps keep the academic culture disciplined and faith-based. Caritas has grown gradually over the years, and students all over Nigeria now prefer it because of its structure and quality.
