University College Birmingham: A Brief History
University College Birmingham has a history that goes back to the late 19th century. Its early development was linked to practical cookery and domestic science education in Birmingham. Over the years, the institution changed its name as its academic provision expanded.
Some of its former names included Birmingham Municipal Technical School, College of Food and Technology, and Birmingham College of Food, Tourism and Creative Studies.
In 1993, the College became an independent Further Education Corporation. It later entered the higher education sector in 2002. In 2007, it received Taught Degree Awarding Powers from the Privy Council. This led to the creation of University College Birmingham.
The institution achieved full university status in December 2012 and became the University College Birmingham known today.
